Stain Advice

DO'S

Spilled a Drink on Your Carpet? Do This First:

  • Act Quickly
The faster you respond, the better your chances of preventing permanent staining.

  • Blot—Don't Rub
Use a clean, white cloth or kitchen towel to gently blot up as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing, which can push the stain deeper.

  • Start from the Outside In
Blot from the outer edges of the spill toward the centre to prevent spreading.

  • Use Cold Water First
For most drinks (except dairy or oily ones), dab the area with a little cold water and continue blotting to dilute the stain.

  • Avoid Over-Saturating
Don’t soak the carpet—too much water can push the spill deeper into the fibres and padding.

  •  Be Cautious with Shop-Bought Carpet Cleaners
Many off-the-shelf products can encapsulate or set the stain, making it harder to remove later—even for professionals.

  • Keep the Area Well Ventilated
Open windows or use a fan to help the carpet dry and prevent musty odours.

  • Call a Professional
If the stain persists or the spill was from a strongly coloured or sticky drink (like wine, coffee, or juice), it’s time to contact a professional.

DON'TS

Stain Removal Don'ts – Avoid These Common Mistakes:

  • Don’t Rub or Scrub the Stain
This pushes the liquid deeper into the carpet and can damage the fibres.

  • Don’t Use Hot Water
Hot water can set certain stains (like blood, wine, or coffee), making them permanent.

  • Don’t Over-Saturate the Area
Soaking the carpet can spread the stain and lead to mould or mildew underneath.

  • Don’t Use Coloured Cloths or Towels
Dyes from the fabric can transfer to your carpet, causing an additional stain.

  • Don’t Apply Bleach or Harsh Chemicals
These can discolour the carpet and damage the fibres, especially on wool or natural fibres.

  • Don’t Use Random Household Cleaners
Multipurpose sprays or washing-up liquids may leave sticky residues that attract more dirt.

  • Don’t Wait Too Long
The longer you leave a spill untreated, the harder it is to remove. Act quickly!

  • Don’t Try Multiple Products at Once
Mixing chemicals can cause reactions or worsen the stain—stick to one approach at a time.
